Care Information:

Grip:

Your paddle comes with a leather grip and a biodegradable overgrip. The leather grip provides the handle with a bit of cushion, comfort, and vibration dampening. The overgrip protects the leather so that it lasts longer and provides a nice tacky surface for your hand to grip to. The overgrip is designed to be replaced. Regular players replace theirs every week or even more frequently. Folks who play more casually might only need to change overgrips every few months. Basically when you stop feeling that nice grippy surface it is time for a new one. There are many overgrips on the market, but the one we use is the only biodegradable overgrip out there. You can purchase replacements directly from us or at EcoGripZone.com

You can also remove the overgrip all together and play with just the leather grip. Leather is a durable and firm grip option that many players love. You can care for your leather grip the same way you would care for any other leather good.

Edge guard tape:

Most plastic paddles come with a bulky band of plastic wrapped around the edge. Manufacturers have wisely branded this as an “edge-guard”, making it seem like an important safety feature. In reality, the hard plastic edge-guard is there to hold cheaply made paddles together and conceal their plastic honeycomb cores. The edges of our paddles are solid wood and we have nothing to hide, so we have no need for a solid edge-guard. However, we know knicks and scrapes happen when you are digging out balls, so we have wrapped the most scraped area of the paddle head in a strong and all natural cotton tape. The tape is biodegradable and easily replaced. When it gets too chewed up for your liking just peel it off and toss it in your compost bin and stick on a new one.

Finish:

We found a product that we love called EcoPoly to finish our paddles with. We apply three coats of this plant-based, zero VOC, penetrating and building, moisture and UV and scratch resistant finish. This finish is designed for interior and exterior wood and concrete floor finishing, so we believe it has the stuff to stand up to many many hours of pickleball play. There is no need to apply any other materials to the surface of the finish, or to clean your paddle with any fancy stuff. If you notice your paddle face or finish starting to wear it is easy to apply a fresh coat of EcoPoly - either drop your paddle off and we will take care of it for you, or we will be happy to walk you through the process to do it yourself.

End Cap:

Instead of a heavy, toxic hard plastic end-cap like all other paddles have, we dip our paddles in a certified biodegradable natural wax to seal the bottom of the handle. If you drop your paddle right on the butt or scratch the butt against something you may see pieces of wax flake off. Don’t worry - your paddle is still sealed and safe. But(t), if you ever want your wax re-dipped, just bring your paddle by and we’ll be happy to put a new one on.

General Care:

While our paddles are designed and made to hold up to the stress of hours and hours of pickleball play, they are not indestructible. To ensure you give your paddle its healthiest longest life we recommend the following:

  • Only use your paddle to play pickleball - don’t hit harder heavier balls like tennis balls with your paddle
  • Keep your paddle away from extreme temperatures - we don’t recommend that you leave your paddle in your car overnight or stored in direct sunlight
  • We recommend that you keep your paddle in the 100% organic cotton bag that it comes in even within other storage bags to keep the surface from scratching against hard objects
